Tokoname Teapot by Studio Gala

Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture is famous for producing high-quality teapots using vermillion clay. It has the longest history among Japan’s six ancient kilns. Characterized by its iron-rich red clay which is fired using an oxidising flame. The vermillion clay contains abundant iron which is considered to be suitable for tea brewing. However, it is challenging to work with and process.  This challenging material has brought about high craftsmanship and artistry in Tokoname's teawares.

The iron in the vermillion clay is believed to harmonize with tannin in tea to enhance the flavour. Since no glaze is used, these teapots absorb tea incrustations and develop subdued patina and sheen. The colour of the black teapot is a result of baking the teapot in a kiln after it went through the 1st firing stage.

Upon opening the lid and seeing the careful craftmanship applied to the tea strainer, one finds the beauty of handcraft.
